SIDS RISK FACTORS RELATED TO PREGNANCY

  • Low Birth Weight (Less than 5 LBS)
  • Premature Baby (Less than 37 weeks)
  • Maternal Smoking During Pregnancy
  • Multiple Births
  • Maternal Age Younger than 18 Years
  • Less than 18 Months Between Births

 BABIES AT AN INCREASED RISK FOR SIDS

  • African Americans (2 X HIGHER RISK)
  • American Indians (GREATER THAN 2 X MORE RISK
  • Mothers who smoke during pregnancy (3X GREATER RISK)
  • Babies who breathe second hand smoke (2.5 X GREATER RISK)
  • Babies who sleep on their tummies (5X GREATER RISK)
  • Babies put on their tummies to sleep who usually sleep on their backs (18-20X GREATER RISK)
