![]() By Melissa Morrill, AAHCC As a new mom, I felt like I was constantly bombarded with advice such as "...give him a pacifier" or "...he needs to take a bottle or you'll be sorry". Along with the postpartum helpers who always wanted to come over and take care of the baby while I took a nap. Looking back on my breastfeeding experience, I now realize that all he needed was me. At a recent OB/GYN annual check up, I was speaking with my Doctor about natural family planning. As we discussed my last menstrual cycle, I told her that I just had my first cycle and my son was 22 months old. She said, "Oh you must have been doing ecological breastfeeding." At the time, it didn't really occur to me exactly what she meant. Now, a few weeks later and a lot of researching, I realized what she was talking about. Little did I realize that ecological breastfeeding is the world's oldest form of birth control.
PART OF THIS ARTICLE IS REMOVED TEMPORARILY - PLEASE CHECK BACK SOON FOR UPDATES Ecological breastfeeding has brought to me the wonders of natural family planning along with a special and needed relationship with my son. Many times I battle with the thought of weaning my son because he's going to be over that magical age of 2 year but I also cherish each and every time I can comfort him with something that no one else can give him. Breastfeeding is our special quiet time together to gather ourselves and to be alone. I feel very lucky to have the friends and family that support our relationship, despite the cultural idea that I should have weaned him already because of his age.
