November Newsletter

Greetings!

Many of you have sent emails with the same question... "where was the October newsletter?" October seemed to fly and I just was not able to get a newsletter out for the month. This might have been the first newsletter I have missed in nearly 5 years!

October we did quietly celebrate our 5 years in business. We decided not to have a party but we did count our blessings and joy for the last five years. I look forward to many more birthday celebrations to come!

As a business, we are constantly changing and evolving into what it seems our customers want the most. We often try programs out for awhile and if they don't work, we take the hint and shift our efforts into another direction. That has certainly been the case for all 5 years of business so far and I imagine it will continue. We try to really listen to our customers and hear what it is that is important to you.  Part of this change included a reduction in classes where attendance low.  As of November 15th, we decided to stop offering the Mommy & Me Activity classes due to low attendance.  They are temporarily not on the calendar but we will consider them again in the future.

Our retail hours have been really cut back due to some of our changes. We have tried to simplify the business so that it can remain manageable through these tough times. We apologize to those of you that have dropped by the store only to find that we were closed. I do know how frustrating that is and am very sorry if it has inconvenienced you. We find that most of our customers are very understanding and supportive and for that we are extremely grateful.

On a positive note, we have some exciting stuff planned for the upcoming weeks (see below). Including a FREE Yoga Workshop to celebrate our very last yoga session for 2008. This workshop will be held December 30th right after our Yoga Class (open to prenatal or mommy & me). The workshop will begin around 11:45 am and we will be offering free bagels & juice on a first come first serve basis. The workshop is being taught by Khundalini Yoga instructor Celeste McNeal and she will be speaking on "Making Mindful Choices in the New Year". This is FREE to everyone and we hope you can make it. Let it be your first mindful choice in preparing for 2009.

We look forward to seeing you soon! Have a safe and happy Thanksgiving next week

Blessings,
Melissa Morrill

Introducing... PURE BIRTH - holistic birth education classes

After over 5 years of teaching natural childbirth, Melissa has recently developed this unique approach to understanding how birth works and educating families in pregnancy.  In Pure Birth, we have taken approaches from authors, Doctors, Midwives and other birth professionals from around the world and combined them together into a new Pure Birth technique.  In addition, using concepts from yoga, meditation, and famous authors such as Dr. Robert Bradley and Midwife Ina May Gaskin, we have brought the best approaches together.

Our unique atmosphere allows for plenty of discussion, hands-on practice and a deeper level of your inner awareness, which ultimately translates into better birth experiences.  We keep our classes small enough for individual attention yet the popularity of our classes allows for a great mix of families and other experiences.  This holistic method is vital to the supporting partner’s as they learn and understand how to help a laboring mother give birth.

New - Mommy 2 Mommies Ring Slings (only available at Natural Lullabies!)
Mommy Slings

We are excited to announce our exclusive partnership with Mommy 2 Mommy. This local company made up of 2 mamas, started making ring slings a few years ago. We have added their wonderful slings into our boutique and are loving them! With a price that is more affordable than many other ring slings and the fact that we are supporting local mamas - it seemed like a perfect match.

These slings are stylish, practical & irresistable. The price is great too! Come in to our Baby Wearing Demonstration every Thursday from 10:00 - 11:00 am to try one on and see if a ring sling is for you. Remember, this free demonstration is open to everyone! Come any time during the hour.

Tips for the first time you try a sling/carrier:

  • make sure the baby is in a good mood (just ate, slept, etc.)
  • stay calm and relaxed
  • try several positions until it feels good for both of you
  • don't give up if it doesn't work the first time - try, try again!
  • it takes time to learn so go easy on yourself and your new baby

Consignment sales for the natural families of Tulsa - now at Natural Lullabies

Finally a way to resell and buy some of those natural baby & family products in Tulsa. Our new Green Family Market is a natural family consignment sale designed to bring like-minded families together and offer opportunities to reuse great items. Don't let those old slings just sit in your closet, sell them and make some money. This opportunity allows families to resale some of our earth-friendly and natural products to other families looking for similar items. Realizing where our economy is these days and still seeing so many families who want to wear their babies in slings and use cloth diapers, this market is the opportunity for those items to be available at a fraction of the cost while supporting our environment by reusing.

UPCOMING SALE DATE: December 13th 10:00 am - 3:00 pm
During the sale, we will be celebrating the holidays with free organic hot cocoa, holiday music and some great friends! Come and check it out.

The Birth Survey

Choosing health care is an important decision perhaps most important during pregnancy.  Resources and education facilitate good decisions.  However information and feedback about health care is scarce or nonexistent especially in the area of maternity care.  The project Transparency in Maternity Care is looking to change the lack of information in this area.
The Transparency in Maternity Care Project was born out of a Coalition for Improving Maternity Services' (CIMS) Conference held in Boston, Massachusetts in the spring of 2006.  The projects goal as stated on their website is as follows, "It is our intention to extend the current social trend toward transparency in health care into the virtually overlooked maternity care arena."  The project seeks to be a resource to mothers and families as they choose their health care options.  The information will help mothers chose information and quality care as well as care that suits their needs and beliefs, as the website conveys, "We believe that women of childbearing age must have access to information that will help them choose maternity care providers and institutions that are most compatible with their own philosophies and needs."

The Birth Survey is not just for mothers, the other goal of the project is to allow health care providers, institutions and practitioners to have feedback from their patients. The four main objectives of the project are as follows

  • Objective 1: Annually obtain maternity care intervention rates on an institutional level for all fifty states.
  • Objective 2 Collect feedback about women's birth experiences using an online, ongoing survey, The Birth Survey.
  • Objective 3: Present official hospital intervention rates, results of The Birth Survey, and information about the MFCI in an on-line format.
  • Objective 4: Increase public awareness of differences among maternity care providers and facilities and increase recognition of the MFCI as the gold standard for maternity care.

The birth survey collects information about both doctors and midwives.  Share your maternity care experience by visiting thebirthsurvey.com.  The survey takes 20-30 minutes to complete.  The survey can be saved at any time while filling it out and resumed at your convenience.
