Welcome Families

Nursing in the News

  June 2007 Newsletter

We know that many of you are staunch breastfeeding advocates. Yippee for that. Here is more news that breastfeeding is helpful for both mom and baby. As if you needed another reason to snuggle up with that little one!

According to an article in Midwifery Today, over 95,000 women nurses were studied between 1986 and 2002. The study found that “those who breastfed for at least two years were 19 percent less likely to suffer a heart attack than those who had not breastfed at all. This risk was independent from other risk factors for heart disease.”

You will notice that the study says the women nursed for at least two years. In our culture, that is not widely acceptable, but it is perfectly acceptable, in fact the norm, in many other countries. Many of you may be facing decisions now about how and when to wean.  Some of you may even be hearing the “advice” of others, suggesting that one year is the limit and  you need to stop. At Natural Lullabies, we support women who choose to nurse for any amount of time. If you need help or information about weaning, or extended breastfeeding, check out our new lactation education series, or attend a La Leche League meeting.

As always, you can contact the store directly for information as well The Breastfeeding class is two sessions and there is one offered June 7th and 14th with Lactation Consultant Deena Licht. To register in advance, go to our website . Many of our doula clients have said they were glad they took a class before baby arrived.
