Prenatal Yoga in Tulsa

Our unique approach to yoga has gone one step further to combine the benefits of yoga with our class discussions and prenatal relaxation. Classes will also include an extended relaxation period, which is shown to be extremely beneficial during pregnancy and in preparation for childbirth. Classes will be 70 minutes long, including approximately 45 minutes of yoga and the remaining time spent on relaxation and discussions.

This program is uniquely designed by Melissa Morrill, who has taken the tremendous benefits of yoga and the importance of education and preparation to develop our unique Prenatal Yoga Classes. Our classes will not only provide the physical benefits of stretching and strengthening the pregnant body for birth, but will prepare the pregnant mind for labor, birth and motherhood. We will explore your weaknesses and focus on your strengths, realizing that these are vital to understanding how we birth our babies.

Come and try a class, there is no registration necessary. There is plenty of room in our new location so bring a pregnant friend with you! For your first class, try to arrive 10 minutes early so you can fill out your registration form. Payments will be accepted at the class or online. Drop-ins are welcome at any time! Bring a yoga mat or use one of the studios and don't forget some water!

Prenatal Yoga Research

Yoga during pregnancy is shown to shorten labor (click link to read abstract)

Significance for Normal Birth: This study provides evidence that regular yoga practice in the last 10-12 weeks of pregnancy improves maternal comfort in labor and may facilitate labor progress. The researchers offer several theories for these effects. First, yoga involves synchronization of breathing awareness and muscle relaxation which decrease tension and the perception of pain. Second, yoga movements, breathing, and chanting may increase circulating endorphins and serotonin, "raising the threshold of mind-body relationship to pain" (p. 112). Third, practicing yoga postures over time alters pain pathways through the parasympathetic nervous system, decreasing one's need to actively respond to unpleasant physical sensations.

Prenatal strategies that help women prepare emotionally and physically for labor may help reduce pain and suffering and optimize wellbeing in childbirth by providing coping skills and increasing self-confidence and a sense of mastery. More research is needed to confirm the findings of this study. However, yoga's many health benefits and the lack of evidence that yoga is harmful in pregnancy or birth provide justification for encouraging interested women to incorporate yoga into their preparations for childbirth.
